The Wife Between Us | Greer Hendricks | Sarah Pekkanen | Book Review
**WARNING - THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS**
Another
domestic thriller featuring a married couple with a dark past, the layers of
secrets shedding off slowly as the story progresses, and none of the characters
are what they seem like. The plot of this story reminded me heavily of The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine (you’ll know why if you have read it).
Nevertheless, tropes like that are my guilty pleasure and additionally, the
story has major plot twists so it’s no surprise that I liked it.
The plot
goes like this – Vanessa’s ex husband Richard is getting married to a young
woman. Seemingly, she is jealous of her replacement and decides to sabotage
their marriage. The plot keeps on switching from present to flashback and back,
and you steadily learn about the pasts of our main characters. There is
a major twist about halfway through the book which I absolutely loved! From
there, as events unfold and a lot of things are going on, you would expect an
ending which will complete the entire picture, as also promised by the blurb of
the book. But that doesn’t happen fully.
Certain loopholes that I felt in the story:
1. I was really hoping that Aunt Charlotte’s
illness plot was going somewhere, but it was eventually just lost.
2. Why did Maureen tell the photographer that the
wedding had been postponed?
3. Nothing is mentioned of Richard’s wife before Vanessa,
except the fact that Richard was unhappy in the marriage and he didn’t really
like to talk much about her.
4. What actually happened to the dog? Did Richard
harm him? If so, why? I needed a little closure there.
5. Also, after learning that Nellie is actually
Vanessa, I really thought that Emma would be Samantha. :P That would explain
all the time given into developing her character, her calling Richard “The Prince”,
someone who is too good to be true, her constant reluctance to be around him,
but when it turned out otherwise, I kinda felt that all the time and space
given to Samantha were really futile.
Nevertheless, I liked the ending twist and all in all, it
was a good book for me. If you enjoyed books like The Girl On The Train and The Last Mrs. Parrish, you’ll like The Wife Between Us.
My Rating – 3/5
