Book Review | He Started It | Samantha Downing | Psychological Thriller | Twisty | Suspenseful
This is the story of three siblings going on a long road trip, throughout the whole book. Narrator Beth (Elizabeth) along with her younger sister Portia and elder brother Eddie goes on this road trip as mentioned in the will of their late grandfather, as a condition to claim his multibillion dollar inheritance. But these siblings have a lot of secrets, a dark past and a lot of hidden intentions. The description was pretty interesting – I mean, come on, reading a road trip during these difficult times when travelling seems a far-sighted dream, I was all for it. But it didn’t turn out as deep and thoughtful as I had expected.
It started
off pretty great, successfully built the suspense (which remains high almost
throughout the book), but the ending didn’t do it for me. Somehow, I was
expecting more. I loved that the writing style was engaging, with an underlying
element of mystery, the scenes were dramatic (a lot of reviewers feel that they
were over dramatic, but they worked for me – I love drama). Almost none of the
characters are likable, so I didn’t really bond with any one of them. But this
isn’t a story about likable and loving people. I get that and love that.
Nevertheless,
He Started It by Samantha Downing was a thriller that definitely kept my
adrenaline rushing throughout, keeping me rooting for the next big reveal.
