Book Review | He Started It | Samantha Downing | Psychological Thriller | Twisty | Suspenseful

This is the story of three siblings going on a long road trip, throughout the whole book. Narrator Beth (Elizabeth) along with her younger sister Portia and elder brother Eddie goes on this road trip as mentioned in the will of their late grandfather, as a condition to claim his multibillion dollar inheritance. But these siblings have a lot of secrets, a dark past and a lot of hidden intentions. The description was pretty interesting – I mean, come on, reading a road trip during these difficult times when travelling seems a far-sighted dream, I was all for it. But it didn’t turn out as deep and thoughtful as I had expected.

It started off pretty great, successfully built the suspense (which remains high almost throughout the book), but the ending didn’t do it for me. Somehow, I was expecting more. I loved that the writing style was engaging, with an underlying element of mystery, the scenes were dramatic (a lot of reviewers feel that they were over dramatic, but they worked for me – I love drama). Almost none of the characters are likable, so I didn’t really bond with any one of them. But this isn’t a story about likable and loving people. I get that and love that.

Another thing that didn’t work for me was the scenes getting too repetitive. It was like car, motel, restaurant, alcohol, repeat. Of course, twists were happening, a lot of them actually. Literally every chapter ends with a cliff hanger, and keeps you engaged. Loved that. But as the twists reveal themselves later, I felt they weren’t worth the suspense created for the. About 3/4th into the book, I really wanted the story to pick up pace reveal things faster. I was rooting for the ending and while I agree it was super dramatic and unpredictable, but I wanted something deeper, something that will connect all the dots. After the ending, I still could not reason with a number of incidents that took place, could not clearly see the entire picture.

Nevertheless, He Started It by Samantha Downing was a thriller that definitely kept my adrenaline rushing throughout, keeping me rooting for the next big reveal.

My Rating – 3/5
