The Sun Down Motel | Simone St. James | Book Review
This
thriller+horror book is for you if you love spooky horror movies that follow
unusually curious protagonists who uncover deep dark secrets of places,
families or themselves. The Sun Down Motel follows two timelines, which appear
to be confusingly interchangeable to the reader. But, it has all the elements
of a pure horror book, that’ll give you the chills and thrills.
Viv Delaney
had disappeared from the Sun Down Motel thirty-five years ago. Now, her niece
Carly Kirk is back in Fell, determined to uncover the secret behind her aunt’s
disappearance all those years ago. Soon she finds out that the Sun Down in not
a normal place, it has a dark secret that looms over the almost alive motel.
A large
chunk of the book actually deals with Viv(then) and Carly(now) digging up the
pasts of the women who had disappeared from the Sun Down. So, a lot of
newspaper articles, online searching, photographs, stalking and investigating. I
felt that some of the sub-plots did not properly blend into the main story at
the end, when I really wanted something interesting to happen with them. For
instance, I thought Nick’s past story did not receive closure when it was
expected (Alma had said that Nick may not have been in his room the day his
brother was murdered). But the spooky elements kept me at the edge of my seat
throughout. I wouldn’t say that I was a huge fan of the characters and their
actions (Viv and Carly’s personalities and habits were almost identical), but
the storyline kept me hooked. Also, the setting kind of reminded me of Schitt’s
Creek!
Though I was
expecting a different sort of ending, I liked the overall experience.
My Rating – 3/5
