The Kiss Quotient | Helen Hoang | Book Review

All the things that make you different make you perfect.

What tempted me to pick this book up was the fairly unique plot. The characters seemed so interesting, and I was curious about how Stella’s Asperger’s would be depicted (I love reading and watching on the spectrum characters, thanks to shows like Atypical and The Good Doctor). What I discovered was heartwarming and unexpected love story, that will stick.

The Kiss Quotient follows Stella Lane, who is a brilliant econometrician, but a not-so-brilliant dater with Asperger’s. In order to prepare herself for her future boyfriend, she hires escort Michael, who is himself struggling between sweet dream and harsh reality. Obviously, they end up falling in love with each other and the book continues on what follows afterward. The departure from conventional gender roles worked great for me. Michael is part Vietnamese and part Swedish, and the scenes taking place in Michael’s house, with his grand family and Stella were delightful. Getting to know bits of the Vietnamese culture is not something I get in a lot of books. The dish that Michael cooks for Stella and his family got my mouth watering! Also, the daily struggles that Stella faced, the constant internal battle against her own feelings, the fear of whether she was nothing but an object of pity for Michael, mirrored profoundness of her character.

The book has a lot of steamy scenes, which were refreshing towards the beginning, but were getting kind of repetitive later. Another point which got me a star down was Michael’s on-again-off-again understanding of Stella’s consent. A lot of scenes showed how appreciative Michael was of Stella’s consent, and with his chivalry he seemed to be the perfect human.  But as the story progress, that understanding seemed to be a bit fluctuating.

The book was a breath of fresh air amidst the conventional (high school) contemporary romances. It depicts how difficult it can be to follow dreams when the harsh cobwebs of reality hold you down; it portrays relationships in a new light, and definitely makes for a fresh and extraordinary read.

My rating – 4/5

Happy Reading!😇
