The Perfect Drug | Chaitanya Saini | Book Review

“The Perfect Drug” by Chaitanya Saini has a unique concept, bound to make you want to read it. I haven’t read much books on spirituality (I do not usually enjoy the genre), but The Perfect Drug was quite good. The plot revolves around Ananya, who gets admission into St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi to study Chemistry. He makes friends, and no different than anyone his age, is full of curiosity and excitement for the journey that lies ahead. He finds a girl named Anushree, with whom he really connects to on a spiritual level, and becomes close to her. But she becomes a drug addict and one fine day disappears out of the blue from Ananya’s life, leaving him heartbroken. Ananya finds a book named “Psychedelic Chemistry” that immensely interests him and hence begins his quest of creating a drug that would enable a person to attain a higher state of consciousness, to rise above the maya veil. But with great power comes great responsibility. Will Ananya be able to handle such a divine and powerful creation?

The writing style is hugely ornamental, which works great for explaining certain things. But its prolonged persistence just makes the narration fall flat. However, I liked how the author effortlessly linked science with spirituality. The book has a lot of chemistry facts and explanations, and I liked how the entire thing was put together. Whenever Ananya explains some outlook of his, I find myself reading with immense interest to grasp it all.

However, I do feel that it could have been a much shorter read. It is unnecessarily dragged at places, with numerous descriptions, to sit through which you have to be really patient. But Ananya’s character development was interesting, which kept me reading. How his character goes through a spectrum of shades, and how he deals with everything happening around him was well crafted.

All in all, The Perfect Drug was unlike anything I have ever read, with a captivating plot, and that is what is going stay with me.

My Rating – 3/5

Happy Reading!😇
