A Mind Blowing Blend of Thrill, Sci-fi & Romance : A Review of Blake Crouch's Dark Matter

They say we are the choices that we make. Is it really so? Crouch’s Dark Matter will get you thinking that and a lot more. This mind-bending sci-fi thriller revolves around physics professor Jason Dessen, who while returning home one quiet Chicago winter night, gets kidnapped by a man in a geisha mask, who brings him to an abandoned power plant. Jason has no idea who this man is or what he wants from him. But he knows that he might never see his family ever again.

The multiverse perspective is not a very unexplored concept. Many books have featured similar plots (The Midnight Library being one of them), and yet for me Dark Matter stands out because of how the intense emotions and the nail-biting thrill blends in harmoniously in the writing. Sentences are short and crisp at places, though a little less of them would do no harm. It does get a little repetitive at places, making you wish to get to the ending fast (something true for most thrillers), but not so much to interfere with your overall experience.

Jason is a man who loves his family, and you will be reminded of that every third page. All he wants to do is to get back to his wife and son, to get his normal life back, and he can go to any extent to do so. He needs to figure out who is the person who did this to him, who stole away his beautiful life and brought him to a place where he doesn’t recognize anybody, which is not his world. But once he finds out, it is not what he had thought of even in his wildest dreams. He needs to get away from this sinister cobweb of dream-and-reality, or reality-and-reality that he is trapped in. Jason’s journey will keep you turning pages like crazy, to get to that last page.

If Dark Matter is your first read of its kind, then it will mess with your mind, and keep you thinking for long after turning the last page. This extremely racy, power packed book will definitely make for a brilliant binge if you feel like a nail-biting thriller one fine cozy afternoon!

My rating – 4.5/5

Happy Reading!😇
