A Twisted Thriller Mystery: Chattopadhyay's Novel is an Unpredictable Page Turner
I was keen on reading more of the Janardan Maity series by Bhaskar Chattopadhyay after reading The Disappearance of Sally Sequeira and it lived upto my expectations in all forms. Here Falls the Shadow is a treat to detective and crime thriller lovers, and even beginners in that genre, though apparently it will seem to fall at the intersection of thriller and horror. The plot is mainly set in Nimdeora, a small and sleeping town near Deoghar, surrounded by dense woods, where lives novelist Sangram Talukdar. His world is turned upside down when he receives not one but two death threatening letters, and he invites detective Janardan Maity to investigate the matter. Maity, along with his friend Prakash Ray, come down to the mysterious town, at the huge Talukdar mansion only to find out that the men of the Talukdar lineage are cursed because of deep and dark secret of the past. Hence begins Maity’s quest to find the truth, but it wouldn’t be easy as nobody among the people associated with the case seems to speak the complete truth. So who or what is behind these ominous happenings? What will Maity do to save Sangram’s life? You need to read the book to find out.
The novel
is everything one expects a crime thriller to be. The suspense is built
gradually, with every sentence, right till the final revelation. The number of
unanswered questions in the readers’ mind only keeps on increasing as they flip
through the pages, making the book unputdownable. Every chapter has a
revelation to make and you are forced to rethink everything you have in your
mind. The roller coaster ride of events keeps you at the edge of your seat
throughout with it’s twists and twirls and I can guarantee that you will never
see the final twist coming. That is what does the job for thriller lovers.
The setting
is beautiful, with vivid description of the town of Nimdeora, the forests, the surrounding
areas, the roads, the sinister environment of the Talukdar residence, even the
dark and suspenseful scenes taking place at night. Janardan’s character deserves
nothing but admiration. With his charming yet composed personality, and his
signature way of revealing the truth only after joining the puzzle pieces and
framing the big picture, all make him the detective everyone loves to read. The
narrator’s bond of friendship with Maity, the mutual care and understanding
they have for each other steals the reader’s heart. The language is simple, the
style of narration is engaging, making the book perfect for beginners.
