A Deeply Intelligent Page Turner: A Short Review Of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl
A
masterpiece portrayal of dysfunctional marriage. That is what Gone Girl is. An
intense plot, beautifully crafted, intriguingly built. Flynn successfully
manages to keep her reader on tenterhooks till the last line. A page turner,
Gone Girl explores the deepest and darkest layers of human psyche, the
destructive effects of a failing marriage and what hides behind perfectly
masked relationships.
The story
revolves around a New York couple, Amy and Nick who move to Missouri owing to
the deteriorating health of Nick’s parents. Amy goes missing on their fifth
anniversary and their living room and kitchen resemble a forced kidnapping
spot, with things messed up and wiped blood on the kitchen floor. The police
and entire America suspect it’s Nick as all evidences point against him. Nick
swears it isn’t him. So, where is Amy and what happened to her?
The
suspense just builds up so intensely as a seemingly mere crime thriller
transforms into a full-fledged portrait of everything wrong in a mismatched
relationship. One of the most prevalent themes of the plot is multiple
personalities of a single person; how we can be two totally different
personalities with two different people. The dependency of a person on the
existence of another person to prove his or her worth and credibility is
something you won’t think of in such depth otherwise. The constant battle
between the innocent and the victim, the strong desire to be one and prove
someone else the other so that oneself is upheld as a person everyone wants to
one to see like is too dark and deep rooted to be viewed as nominal.
The book is
a perfect pick for you if you are a digger for psychological thrillers. The
book is packed with twists and turns everywhere and the moment you believe that
you have figured it out, you are proven wrong. Nothing is as it seems. So get
ready to dive deep into the layers of relationships, lies, manipulations,
malice, revenge, multi-layered personalities, betrayal and self-destructive
love if you are planning to pick it up!
